Editor's Letter – Winter 2008

July 15, 2008

Children are not silly and take in far more then we give them credit for. I recently had to explain to my sons what was going on in the world as they have picked up key words such as “market crash”, “recession”, “loss of jobs”, “increase in costs”, etc. through the various conservations I have had. Peter, aged 6, asked me if Father Christmas was alright – I asked what he meant – he said, well if everyone here is worried about money, so must Father Christmas be. I sat the boys down and explained that whilst Father Christmas would still be visiting all the children in Crawley, he would not be able to give as much as he has given in the past. Peter took this on board but then declared, “well if the silly bankers were so naughty, why haven’t they got into trouble, because all they have done is make it more difficult for Father Christmas!” I must admit, he has a point!

Whilst this is a very worrying time, there are so many great things happening in Crawley and Horsham at the moment – and we all need to think creatively on how we continue to entertain our families. One of my highlights recently, was the production of High School Musical at the Hawth. I have never seen so many children enjoying themselves in one place. I was amazed and very moved to see most of the children standing, singing, dancing and having a ball. Theatre offers so much to all the family and we are very lucky to have such a diverse and great theatre as the Hawth in Crawley and the Capitol in Horsham.

I hope you all have a very good Christmas and Happy New Year – may all your wishes and aspirations come true.
